Upconverting - Process by which a standard definition picture is changed to a simulated high-definition picture.
Cable Modem - A data modem that provides an Internet connection over the TV cable network. Video-on-demand or interactive services may require such a connection.
Dolby Digital 5.1 - Also known as AC-3, it provides 6 channels of sound: left, center, right, left rear, right rear, and sub-woofer. It is also called "5.1 channels" since the 6th channel has reduced bandwidth. Dolby Digital 5.1 is the audio standard for all U.S. digital TV stations, most DVDs, some DBS programs, and many theaters.
8-VSB - Acronym for the transmission method used for over-the-air DTV broadcasting in Canada and the USA. Eight discreet amplitude level, "vestigial side-band" broadcast transmission technology. VSB is an analog modulation technique used to reduce the amount of spectrum needed to transmit information through cable TV, or terrestrial broadcasting.
Wide screen - A term given to picture displays with a wider aspect ratio than NTSC 4:3. Digital HDTV or SDTV is referred to as "16:9 wide screen." Most motion pictures also have a 16:9 wide screen aspect ratio. Most Digital TVs have a screen that is wider than it is tall (if a Digital TV screen is nine inches high, it's 16 inches wide.) When watching a show recorded in the wide screen format on a Digital TV, viewers see more of the movie, while when viewing wide screen format on an analog TV, cropped edges are evident.
CDTV - Canadian Digital Television, a not-for-profit, government-approved body, with members from all sectors of the TV industry. CDTV is mandated to advise its members, Industry Canada and the CRTC on the roll out of DTV in Canada.
HDTV - High Definition Television - HDTV is a TV system having approximately twice the vertical and horizontal picture resolution of today's NTSC TV and having a wide aspect ratio of 16 - 9. Two HDTV formats are currently in use; (a) 1920 pixels per line and 1080i lines per frame and (b) 1280 pixels per line and 720p lines per frame. HDTV can be recognised by its spectacular picture resolution, freedom from annoying artefacts and impressive 5.1 channel surround sound.
